Returning Canadians + Parent Sponsorship
Many Canadian citizens or PRs return after years abroad to sponsor parents/grandparents. Two main options:
- Parent Grandparent Sponsorship (PGP) — leads to PR for parents
- Super Visa — 10-year multi-entry visitor (not PR)
PGP Eligibility (Sponsor)
- Canadian citizen or PR, 18+
- Living in Canada (returning Canadian must establish Canadian residence)
- LICO 1.5x income for 3 years preceding
- Sign 20-year undertaking (3-year for spouse)
PGP Process
- Annual Interest to Sponsor opens January (briefly)
- Lottery selection ~20,000 from interest pool
- If selected, submit complete sponsorship application
- Processing 20-30 months
- Parents become PRs
Super Visa Alternative
- 10-year multi-entry visitor visa
- Each entry up to 5 years
- Sponsor LICO 1.0x (lower than PGP)
- Mandatory private medical insurance CAD 100K+/yr coverage
- Application 8-12 weeks (much faster than PGP)
- Not PR but allows long-term living in Canada
Returning Canadian Considerations
- Re-establish Canadian residence (CRA, provincial healthcare, address)
- 3 years LICO 1.5x income required for PGP
- If recently returned, may need to wait 3 years before PGP eligible
- Super Visa alternative meanwhile
