French Category Overview

IRCC introduced category-based draws targeting French-speaking applicants in 2023. Significantly lower CRS cutoffs than general draws.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Express Entry profile (FSW, CEC, FST)
  • CLB 7+ in all 4 French language skills (TEF/TCF Canada)
  • English not required (but adds CRS points if also CLB 7+)
  • NOC TEER 0/1/2/3 work experience

CRS Cutoffs (2024-2026)

  • French category: 450-480 typical
  • Compare general draws 470-540
  • French + healthcare combined: even lower cutoffs

French Test Options

  • TEF Canada (Test devaluation de francais)
  • TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du francais)
  • Both equally accepted by IRCC

Strategy for Chinese Applicants

  • French CLB 7+ requires 12-24 months intensive preparation
  • Alliance Francaise classes, online tutoring
  • TEF/TCF practice exams
  • Combine with healthcare/STEM background for double-category access
