Trades Pathways Overview

Three main pathways for trades workers:

  • Express Entry FST (Federal Skilled Trades)
  • Express Entry Trades Category Draws (since 2023)
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (BC PNP Skills, AAIP Trades, Atlantic AIP)

FST Eligibility

  • 2+ years full-time skilled trades experience in last 5 years
  • NOC TEER 2 or 3 trades
  • Job offer for 1+ year OR Canadian certificate of qualification
  • CLB 5 speaking/listening, CLB 4 reading/writing
  • Settlement funds CAD 13,757+

Eligible NOC Trades (Sample)

  • NOC 72200 Electricians (except industrial and power system)
  • NOC 72300 Plumbers
  • NOC 72400 Welders and related machine operators
  • NOC 73101 Heavy equipment operators
  • NOC 72106 Heavy-duty equipment mechanics
  • NOC 73100 Crane operators
  • NOC 72500 Sheet metal workers
  • NOC 72106 Cabinetmakers

Express Entry Trades Category Draws (Since 2023)

IRCC began category-based draws targeting trades workers in 2023. Lower CRS cutoff (~430-490) compared to general draws (470-540). Applicants need:

  • Eligible Express Entry profile
  • Trades occupation NOC TEER 2 or 3
  • French CLB 7+ (if applying French speaker category)

  • BC PNP Skills Immigration Skilled Worker — Trades
  • Alberta AAIP Alberta Express Entry — Trades
  • Saskatchewan SINP Hard-to-Fill Skills Pilot
  • Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) accepts TEER 4/5 trades

Canadian Certificate of Qualification

Provincial trade certification (Red Seal). Required for some trades to practice in Canada. Process: apply to provincial trades regulator, demonstrate experience, may need to pass Red Seal exam.

Three-Disciplinary Disclosure

  1. Ontario LSO only (P60313). LSO Refugee Law Certified. US bar 2027.
  2. No PRC law licence — Shanghai cooperating firm.
  3. Not financial advisors.
