Pathway Overview

  • Immigration: Express Entry FSW NOC 41101 — CRS 470+ typical
  • Bar admission: NCA exam → articling → bar exam → provincial Law Society call

NCA Exam Process

Step 1: Credentials Assessment

Submit Chinese law degree + bar admission certificate. NCA assigns subject exams.

Step 2: Subject Exams

Most Chinese-trained lawyers complete 6-8 exams over 12-24 months:

  • Canadian Constitutional Law
  • Canadian Criminal Law
  • Foundations of Canadian Law
  • Canadian Administrative Law
  • Canadian Professional Responsibility

~CAD 425 per exam, pass rate 50-70%.

Step 3: Provincial Bar Admission

NCA Certificate → articling (10-12 months) → bar exam → call.

Pre-Call Practice Restrictions

NCA-completed but not yet articled cannot practice independently. Can work as paralegal, law clerk, in-house counsel.
