Mentoring Newcomer Entrepreneurs: A Real Path Forward When Immigration Windows Narrow

I had the privilege of joining a wonderful group of mentors and newcomers at a recent KEYS Employment & Newcomer Services event — a dedicated space for immigrants thinking seriously about building something of their own in Canada.

A Real Option That Is Too Often Overlooked

For many immigrants currently on temporary permits, the path forward is not obvious. Immigration windows are narrowing, the job market is tough, and the anxiety of watching permit deadlines approach is real.

But entrepreneurship — whether that means starting something new or taking over an established business from a retiring owner — is a real and often overlooked option. It can be a way to:

  • Create your own employment when the job market feels closed;
  • Put down roots in the community and contribute locally;
  • Lay a meaningful, documented foundation for permanent residence.

The business succession piece in particular is underappreciated. Across Kingston and eastern Ontario, many excellent small businesses are facing owner retirement — and newcomers with capital, skills, or strong work ethic can be the right next generation of leadership.

If You Are a Newcomer With an Idea — Reach Out

If you are a newcomer with a business idea, or you are curious about what it takes to acquire an existing business as part of your Canadian pathway, I am always happy to connect.

Thank you to KEYS Employment & Newcomer Services for creating this space, and to my fellow mentors Ali Zaydan, Norman Musengimana, Marie Bazile, and Barb Danielewski for the genuinely great conversation.
