CBC Interview: A Refugee-Turned-Lawyer Finds Her Voice

This week, I had the honour of being interviewed by CBC Ontario Morning — my first time being featured on national mainstream Canadian media as an immigration and refugee lawyer.

Ten Years Ago, I Had No Idea What the Road Ahead Would Look Like

Ten years ago, I fled domestic violence with my children and arrived in Canada not knowing what tomorrow would bring. Five years ago, my story appeared in the Toronto Star — as an asylum seeker, a former shelter resident, and one of the plaintiffs in a Charter challenge led by the now Madam Justice Avvy Go.

Today, I spoke on national media as an immigration and refugee lawyer — and as the recipient of the 2026 Inspirational Entrepreneur Award from Kingston Economic Development Corporation. I am the first Chinese immigrant to receive this honour.

A Privilege, and a Responsibility

As one of the few lawyers in Canada who has walked the path from refugee claimant to immigration and refugee lawyer, this recognition is not just about my journey. It is a privilege — and a responsibility. It reminds me to never forget where I came from, and to carry forward the conviction that has brought me here:

“Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8

Thank You

Thank you to my family and my church family, who stood with me long before any recognition came. Thank you to every person who extended kindness and mentorship when my path was uncertain. And thank you to every client who has placed their trust in me — your courage continues to sharpen mine.

My hope for the next ten years is to live out the mission of BridgePoint Law — one step at a time, steadier and stronger.
