What Is the Canada Maple Leaf Card?
The Maple Leaf Card (officially the Permanent Resident Card) is the physical travel document issued to Canadian permanent residents (PRs). It is wallet-sized, valid for 5 years, and required for entry to Canada by commercial carrier (airline, train, bus, ship). PR card holders are not citizens but have the right to live, work, study, and access social services anywhere in Canada.

PR Card Renewal, Replacement, Residency
Renewal (Form IMM 5444)
PR cards expire after 5 years. Renewal requires demonstrated residency obligation compliance under IRPA s. 28 — 730 days physical presence in Canada in any rolling 5-year period. Renewal fee CAD 50. Processing 60-110 days. We file expedited renewal requests when travel is imminent.
Replacement (Lost/Stolen/Damaged)
Lost or stolen PR cards require replacement (IMM 5444 + IMM 5536). Fee CAD 50. Importantly: a lost PR card does NOT mean loss of PR status. Status is separate from the physical card.
Residency Obligation (730-Day Rule)
The 730-day rule is the most common reason PRs lose status. Exceptions: time accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse abroad, time employed by a Canadian business abroad, time as a dependent child of a Canadian citizen abroad. Failed residency obligation leads to s. 41 reportability, s. 44 referral, and possible loss of status. Appealable to IAD on humanitarian grounds.
PR Loss Prevention When Travelling
For PRs spending significant time outside Canada (China-based business owners, dual-residence families), we draft residency obligation pre-emptive documentation packages and counsel clients on humanitarian-record-keeping in advance of the 5-year mark. Real cases: Recent Case Outcomes.
From PR to Citizenship
PRs become eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship under Citizenship Act s. 5(1) after: 1,095 days physical presence in Canada within the 5 years preceding application; tax compliance (3 of 5 years); language proficiency CLB 4 (if 18-54); knowledge of Canada test (if 18-54). Citizenship processing typically 8-13 months. Once granted, the Maple Leaf Card is no longer required for entry — passport (Canadian) is used instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a Canada Maple Leaf Card valid?
The PR Card is valid for 5 years from issuance. Renewal requires meeting the residency obligation (730 days in Canada in the preceding 5 years). A lost or expired PR card does not by itself terminate PR status — but you cannot board a commercial carrier to Canada without a valid PR card.
What happens if I lose my Maple Leaf Card while abroad?
You cannot board a commercial carrier to Canada without it. Apply for a one-time Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at the nearest Canadian visa office. Processing 30-90 days. Land overland (US border, where allowed by US authorities), or apply for PR card replacement once back in Canada. Fee CAD 50.
How do I keep my PR status when working in China?
If your Canadian employer assigned you to work abroad, that time counts as Canadian residency under IRPA s. 28(2)(b)(ii) — preserve the assignment letter, payroll records, and proof of employment relationship. If you are accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse abroad, that also counts. Otherwise, plan returns to Canada to meet the 730-day requirement.
