On September 26, 2025, the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour in Kingston came alive with a shared spirit of purpose and collaboration. I had the great honor of serving as the Keynote Speaker for “Many Hands, One Journey: A Collaborative Path Towards a Welcoming Community.” This was more than just an event—it was a testament to Kingston’s collective commitment to inclusion, compassion, and partnership. Together, we explored what it truly means to build a community where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.

The conference brought together a remarkable network of organizations united by one common goal: supporting our newest residents and helping them make Kingston their home. From ACFOMI and KEYS Employment & Newcomer Services to KCHC Immigrant Services, Diocese of Ontario Refugee Support, Kingston Literacy & Skills, and Le Réseau de soutien à l’immigration francophone, each group represented a vital link in the chain of community care. Seeing so many dedicated individuals—lawyers, social workers, educators, and advocates—working side by side was a vivid reminder that meaningful progress happens when we move forward together.

As I reflected on the conversations shared that day, one message stood out clearly: true welcome goes beyond helping newcomers settle—it’s about helping them belong. It means creating pathways to meaningful work, access to legal and educational resources, and opportunities for social connection and growth. The energy, empathy, and determination in that room were inspiring, reaffirming that Kingston’s strength lies in its unity and compassion.

Let’s keep walking this shared path—many hands, one journey—toward a future where everyone feels at home.
